Little thoughts, Little desires : An Attempt on World Environment Day
Come 5th June and we show a strong penchant for celebrating this day. “The World Environment Day”, with aplenty promises resting peacefully either on our lips or heart! This is so as the day is observed every year but the promises made are broken every time. Little cares, little thoughts refuse to work in the matter of conserving this bountiful nature. A sense of satiating our self interest works profoundly and eventually negligence crops up and our nature suffers a terrible fate! Little known, if nature is at stake, living a life of care and comfort will be a distant story!
Nature abhors vacuum. It dislikes the dollops of silence. Liveliness is the one and only choice of this nature closely connected to our environment. But it is really surprising to note how this environment is being overlooked for countless reasons! We slash the dense vegetation with a club to make our path in the dark forests. Such forests are even destroyed apart from the natural fire to make the human habitation! The trees are uprooted to expose the “wet white segment”, the life of a tree. The branches are cut into pieces to dry in the open sunshine before the human use! Moreover, less transpiration leads to less rainfall, leaving a dreary desert behind in place of greenery. The ponds are choked to build sky scrapers to redefine urbanisation! The ecosystem is simply perturbed. The balance is titled, preparing for a new dimension of disaster! On the other hand, hunting being a favourite sport, the rare species are found to be on the verge of extinct! A significant reduction in the number of royal Bengal Tigers, venomous snakes, black bucks and above all priceless tortoise is a really a matter of grave concern! Laws are there but being unimplemented for a pretty long time have made them redundant! To be very frank, if we and our administration manage to look after them amid our tight work schedules, miracles might happen! Our little thoughts can breed little wants and turn our nature into a true saviour!
The present year’s theme is ” Restoration of our ecosystem”, which is a pretty difficult proposition! It is not an overnight task like that of sending messages and receiving replies in a click! It is not about giving alms to the poor or helping a needy individual at the very outset of a story! A long procedure where discipline and devotion are a must before repentance makes its appearance on the human screen and unfolds a novel chapter of tragedy!!
