Poetry – Rudrapriya Sen

While Solving Sums

He gazed at his book,
with a rather vacant look.
It simply made no sense,
the sums were just immense.
Geometry, Time, Profit and Loss,
all he was thinking of chocolates and candy floss.
He sent his eyes to the sky, calm and blue,
the clouds were absent and he didn’t have a clue.
“Have you solved the sums?” came mother’s words,
while he was battling with shields and swords.
He gazed at his sums, only a few of them were solved,
it seemed to be like a murder case with no clues involved.
Mother came in as quietly as she could,
what was she going to do? Strike him with wood ?
He closed his eyes expecting to get a blow on his head,
while mother saw the sums, her face turned very red.
He looked at her fearfully, waiting for her to speak
“Is it okay?” he whispered with a small squeak.
Mother’s face looked normal, no more fearsome.
“It is hard, you know, to imagine ,to wonder while doing sums . “Holding her breath she said, “There’s only some !”
