Sunday Poem By Shahid Abbas

“A Whisper in the Dark”

Looking up
mist falls from trees
rain makes itself felt
as a light touch; a mere whisper
Fog covers streets as darkness descends
friends for a brief moment it seems
it becomes difficult to breathe
fog like smoke swirls around making inhalation feel like drowning
People remain in their homes as though in lockdown
some are sick with the virus
they fall like dry leaves in autumn
many are unaccustomed to dense fog
invading like an attacking unruly mob
engulfing humans
cutting off safe space
Despite heavy outer clothes
the fog seeps through as a relentless burglar
an enemy waging a silent war
we are people lost in the storm
frantically searching for an escape route
yet
we cannot even see our hand in front of us
we must stay put
there is no way out until it lifts
nature always has the final word
alas we wait
