25th May. An important day to celebrate by the poets. The day marks the birth anniversary of Kazi Nasrul Islam, a poet, writer, musician and the national poet of Bangladesh. His creations primarily focus on religious sentiments and rebellion against the tyranny of the Imperial rule in the Indian Subcontinent for a span of 200 years.The manner he put forward himself in the domain of socio- political justice earned him the title of ‘Bidrohi Kavi’.
Though born in a Bengali Muslim Kazi family, he took the education and became well versed in the different genres of art and creation. He even worked with a rural theatrical group named “Letor Dal”. Moreover, his career spanned from becoming a part of the British Administration to a reputed journalist in Calcutta to a poet and lyricist of rebel! His works comprised “The Rebel”, “The Song of Destruction” and “The Comet”. All these are still appreciated and embraced by his fans and followers. Owing to his tempest of protest against the British imperialism, he was imprisoned too. Behind the bars inspired him to pen “Rajbandir Jabanbondi”.The work created a wave of patriotism in the minds of the country men. His themes mainly focused on freedom, love, integrity and above all humanity. Things like bigotry, communalism, caste and creed were severely disliked by him. He always considered such stuff to be an impediment in the progress of human race! However, the most unique matter about his work was the extensive use of Arabic and Persian words and expressions in Bengali language. Besides, it is note worthy to mention that though he composed four thousand songs, lack of preservation resulted in the loss of quite a few stunning numbers, including Ghazals.
A multi faceted talented individual. His creative genius was unbridled. But at the age of forty three, he began to suffer from an unknown ailment, which was latter diagnosed and discovered as “Pick’s disease” by a group of veteran doctors. It was an ailment related to the degeneration of nervous system! But his family took him back to Bangladesh where he breathed his last on 29th August, 1976. Truly the life span of the exceptional people is always shortened by the Lord above. But today we ought to keep all such factors at bay and indulge in the celebration of his birthday, cut the cake and light the candles in the sweet memory of such a beautiful person who is still among us to encourage even in the darkest moments of life!!
