Bibhuti Bhusan Bandopadhyay: The Finest Story Teller the World has ever produced.

A Warm Tribute on his 126th Birth Anniversary.
The hedonism of creativity is simply unbridled by nature. Creativity is an art that has managed to inspire the connossieur down the ages. The poets, authors, novelists, essayists and many more have always tried to give their best through their pen, keeping aside any mode of compromise that might dwindle their power of fantasy!
Bibhuti Bhushan Bandopadhyay was one of the finest story tellers the world has ever witnessed! Born to Mahananda Bandopadhyay and Mrinalini Devi on 12 September 1894, Bibhuti never thought of creating some of the master pieces which were later adapted into films. Bibhuti’s father was a Sanskrit scholar and an elegant story teller by profession. He was the eldest among their five children. After completing his graduation from Surendranath College in Calcutta, Bibhuti began his creative journey. His perfect blend of fantasy with reality enabled him to create “Pather Panchali”, “Aranyok”, “Chander Pahar” and the list is simply endless! The characters of ‘Pather Panchali’ and “Aranyak” are round as with the development of plot they matured to inspire the readers to be at one with them. Durga and Apu were introduced in the novel to show how modernism gradually made its passage to India. The afternoon rains, its shivering effect on Apu, the childish prank to run with the train on the track still touch the heart of the millions. The soulful cry on the untimely death of Durga gave the story a completely new turn to suggest the truth of life beyond the obvious! The vivid narrative structure has immortalised the work. Certainly, no stone was left unturned in creating “Pather Panchali” ( The Song of the Road). Who could afford to forget Dobru Panna of “Aranyak”? The maverick culture has been exquisitely delineated by the author. The local dialects and their respective ascents conjure up the true picture of the rural bengal in its remotest term! Bibhuti Bhusan was truly versatile and extremely adroit in creating a perfect backdrop in his novels. Shankar in “Chander Pathar” is an ideal individual to instill the spirit of adventure in the teenagers. The story of Black Mamba, the most venomous snake of the world makes the hair stand on one’s skin. The thrills, perils, excitement envisaged by Shankar during his long tour in the dark continent are some of the ingredients wanted by one and all. The author’s stories span between the typical rural life, far from the madding crowd and the adventures replete with fear, insecurity and danger. There might be an undercurrent of romanticism in his novels. But it has not been deeply explored by the literature lovers, instead too much emphasis is laid upon the settings, characters and the unique nature of creation.
The 126th Birth Anniversary of this legendary figure is observed today in silence. A short span of 56 years on this earth, yet so profoundly significant! Comparing to his contemporaries, one can easily state the true nature and purpose of his creative cycle. He was never romantic in his deals, but always spoke of some of the dark secrets, dark truths of life. Posthumously, Bibhuti was awarded with Rabindra Puroshkar. Truly the legend will never return among us, but his foot prints on the sands of time will never fail to show us the “endless ocean” lying ahead!!
