THE GODDESS descends on the Earth : A View on Saraswati Puja

Come Saturday and the Goddess will descend from the Heaven to be worshipped by the knowledge seekers. The poor mortals are ready to offer their prayers to her. But this Goddess of knowledge, wisdom, learning and music has a tremendous importance in our Hinduism. She is not only the Goddess but our very own mother. She is very close to our heart and soul. Her blessings are always sought to reach the pinnacle of success! A truth which cannot be denied by us.
Saraswati is the spouse of the creator Brahma. She was created by the latter to support him in his creative process. It seemed as if the ‘cake’ was baked by Brahma and garnished by Saraswati with stars, planets and the sun to cater a sense of totality to the creative process. However, there is a different opinion. The Preserver Vishnu created the Goddess and gave her to Brahma to carry on the process of creation in a quite smooth manner. Indeed an interesting matter to ponder upon!
She is attired in white. She is beautiful. She sits on a bloomed lotus. She is accompanied by swan and peacock. She symbolises purity. Her swan stands for the flights of fantasy. Her Veena produces the eternal harmony in the whole creation. She has four arms, each carrying a significant object. The Vedas and the rosary represent timeless knowledge and profound penance! The other two hold the musical instrument.
On the other hand once Saraswati was late for a ritual. Realising the importance of the situation, Brahma created another Goddess named Gayatri who completed the ritual. This made Saraswati furious and devastated. She cursed Brahma not to be worshipped in the world. Thus Brahma is only worshipped in Pushkor, Rajasthan.
There could be thousands of reasons behind the arrival of the Goddess. She is a river. She is our very own mother. She has different manifestations. She is white, blue, yellow and many more to grace the occasion. Her variety is beyond the human comprehension. She is an embodiment of all the virtues purifying the human mind. Forsooth money and knowledge complement each other. Yet the pearls of knowledge and wisdom bear the utmost importance, keeping the silver bucks at bay at times!!
